Race Equality and Education Project

This project had three aspects:

Progress of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 in Scottish Education (local authorities) Project 2007/8

In November 2007, CERES began a piece of work to:

The data collection and analysis elements were undertaken in the period November 2007–January 2008.  To avoid making unnecessary demands on council staff it was decided that the work be desk-based and concentrate on the RR(A)A implementation data for Scottish authorities, the responsible public bodies, which were available online.  Such information was supplemented by accessing HMIE INEA inspection reports for the period November 2002–December 2007 (the 5-year period since the Act became operational in Scotland) as a means of including further available material relevant to the evaluation of RR(A)A  implementation.

A summary report will be available in April 2008.

CERES and Persona Dolls Project

In 2003-4, CERES organised a series of seminars in Scotland for early years educators and workers to develop techniques of working with very young children on equalities issues.  The outcomes of this work is documented.

Anti-racist drama lesson plans Project

In 2003- 4, CERES associate Zee Sulleyman developed 10 lesson ideas for teachers in upper primary and lower secondary using drama as a medium for introducing anti-racist work with pupils.  These lessons are designed for teachers who are not drama experts.  These lessons have proven so popular that CERES has had requests from schools in New York(USA), Ontario, Canada and Germany to use the materials. The format has also been used by Zee Sulleyman to develop drama lesson ideas to address the topic of Islamophobia.

Bilingualism post Devolution Project (1999)

CERES worked with members of the Scottish English as an Additional Language Co-ordinating Group (SEALCC) to produce ‘Bilingualism, Community Languages and Scottish Education:a challenge for policy makers and practitioners in devolved Scotloand’.  The issues and action points identified in this brief report is as relevant in 2008.
