Alan Bell (Associate)

Before joining Moray House Institute of Education Alan worked in adult education and also as a primary teacher. His first job as a lecturer was in the field of community education. In 1985, he became involved in multicultural and anti-racist education (MCARE), designing and delivering in-service, staff development courses for the education and social work departments of several local authorities. He also became involved in the development of local authority MCARE policy and was a consultant to a number of voluntary organisations committed to anti-racist work.

From 1993-97, he was senior lecturer with overall responsibility for developing Institute equal opportunities policy and for designing and teaching modules in anti-discriminatory practice for under- and post-graduate students. In 1997, he took early retirement but continued his link with CERES. Since 2001 he has worked on projects in such fields as an audit of research on minority ethnic people in Scottish education, developing anti-racist practice in the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and collating examples of anti-racist initiatives in Scottish schools. His recent has involved researching the impact of the the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 within Scottish education authorities and schools. Many of Alan’s reports can be found within the CERES publications section of this site. Alan is currently also working on the anti-sectarian education resource.
