Laura Mitchell (Staff)
Before her secondment to Moray House Institute of Education as a Teaching Fellow in Race and Ethnicity in 2005, Laura worked as Principal Officer for Equalities Education in the City of Edinburgh Council.
Following her PGCE, Laura taught English in a number of multi-racial secondary schools in Yorkshire before moving to Edinburgh, where she joined the staff of the Multicultural Education Centre in 1982. Since that time, she has continued to work in multicultural and anti-racist education (MCARE), developing curricular packages, designing staff development materials and delivering courses, writing and introducing school and authority-wide policies and embedding anti-harassment and equalities approaches within a wide range of education initiatives.
She has worked with CERES since the early 1990’s on a number of national projects and the development of resources such as the Race Equality Audit for Schools in 2004. In 2007, she co-wrote with Judith Mackinlay, the Gender Equality: A Toolkit for Education Staff, which was commissioned by the Scottish Government and the former Equal Opportunities Commission. Since 2005, she has been working with CERES on a staff development package for teachers on Equality, Diversity and Anti-Discrimination. She currently lectures to undergraduate student teachers and postgraduate teachers on race equality and social justice. Laura is also working with Rowena developing an e-module on Equality, Diversity and Anti-discrimination for students at the University of Edinburgh.
