Chartered Teacher Programme

Working with you to provide the best possible framework for excellence in teaching

The Moray House School of Education is committed to providing an award leading to Chartered Teacher status. The School of Education, along with a wide range of dynamic new partnerships, offers a professionally rewarding Chartered Teacher Programme. Teachers who undertake the award will achieve professional development of the highest standard and will also benefit from the financial remuneration attached to the successful completion of this professional qualification in teaching.

"Teachers who undertake the award will achieve professional development of the highest standard..."

Our Master of Teaching (MTeach) degree has full accreditation from the GTC Scotland as a programme leading to the award of Chartered Teacher. Our degree guides you through a programme of professional development, which includes academic study, work-based learning and professional action, and is delivered through partnership agreements.

Our aims are:
To enhance the professional understanding, knowledge, skill and action of experienced teachers in schools with a view to supporting the development of their practical classroom skills;
To enable teachers to meet the demands of a rapidly changing educational and professional environment;
To enhance teachers' understanding of teaching and learning;
To enhance critical analysis and evaluation of practice;
To build on teachers' existing professional development.

Entry Requirements
Entry to the programme is limited to experienced and professionally qualified teachers who are fully registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland, have reached the top point on the main grade scale for teachers and have undertaken Continuing Professional Development. All applicants must have a GTC certificate of eligibility. This can be obtained on line at www.gtcs.org.uk at CPD, CT-application form. Applicants must be confident that their working environment will offer opportunities for them to bring forward evidence to meet the Standard for Chartered Teacher.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can I complete the course?
It is envisaged that participants will take two modules a year and complete the MTeach in 6 years. Participants seeking APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning) will likely complete the MTeach in a shorter time.

How many modules can I receive Accreditation for Prior Learning for?
We can give APL for up to 6 modules, following successful completion of module one (either with us or with another accredited CT provider). Please note that to receive the Master of Teaching award you must complete a minimum of 6 modules at Moray House School of Education.

How do I make my claim for Accreditation of Prior Learning?
Please see the 'APL Guidance Notes' in the box above.

What’s the difference between APFL and APEL?
APFL is accreditation for prior formal learning (certificated courses such as MMS). APEL is accreditation for prior experiential learning (practice-based experience).

Can I undertake the MTeach programme while enrolled on other masters courses?
No, studying on another course must be suspended while completing MTeach modules and vice versa.

I aim to complete module one at Dundee University and would then like to come to Edinburgh to gain the Master of Teaching through APL of 6 modules and then completing one option module and the final project.
You may complete module one at any of the accredited providers and then go to another to complete your CT masters, however you must complete a minimum of 6 CT modules at Edinburgh to gain the MTeach, therefore you may only claim APL for up to 5 modules. In addition it will be necessary to review your action plan (part two of the assessment) in light of the content of the MTeach as it may vary from that of the provider of module one.

I have completed a postgraduate certificate / postgraduate diploma / masters already do I get automatic credit on the CT/ MTeach?
There is no automatic credit/transfer. CT Modules are quite different from modular master in that you must prove that you meet the leaning outcomes of the module, submit work at master’s level and prove that you meet the Standard for Chartered Teacher. Submissions must be 50% work-based. Some MMS modules are very much work-based and so participants will have planned, implemented and evaluated projects etc and have gathered evidence. If this is the case then mapping to the Standard will be significantly more straightforward. However, it should be noted that CT modules run for 5 months where MMS modules run for only 3. The extended length of time allows CT participants fully plan, implement and reflect.

How much will it cost me?
Module and APL current fee information can be found here
University of Edinburgh Graduate Discount Scheme may apply
