The core business of the department
of Curriculum Research & Development (CRD) is that of initial teacher
education primarily concerned with all aspects of the school community. We
prepare students for teaching in both the primary and secondary phases. Staff
have strong links with schools in Edinburgh, the Borders and the Forth Valley
areas and it is on the quality of such partnerships that our
programmes of
initial and continuing teacher education are founded.
Staff from the department work in teams with representatives from other
departments on course management groups, Moray House School of Education
committees and for shared research interests. The department also includes
Scottish Interactive Technology
Centre (SITC) and the Edinburgh
Centre for Mathematical Education (ECME).

The wide range of experience in school education subjects is also complimented
by the TESOL section which provides a wide range of courses at postgraduate
level. Our links with staff from the mainstream mathematics, science and
computing areas of the university are developing via the SCI-FUN initiative.
The department offers Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses for
in-service education of teachers. Many of the courses are tailor made and delivered
either on the campus or at other locations in the UK or abroad.
Members of the department contribute to curriculum initiatives on the
national and international scene and many serve on national committees.
Staff are encouraged to pursue research interests and
this is an increasingly high profile element of the work in the department.
