This is a four-year Honours degree
which will give a thorough grounding in teaching English as a second or
foreign language.
This programme is not currently running. However, the TESOL team are willing
to discuss with Ministry of Education officials or Heads of Universities,
the possibility of re-opening or using parts of it.
This degree can be adapted to meet the needs of groups from specific countries.
Sponsors of such groups are invited to contact the administrator to discuss
their needs.
It may also be possible to combine elements of TESOL 1 and
TESOL 2 with other degree programmes.
This four-year programme leads to an Honours degree
in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). TESOL draws
on insights from language studies and from educational theory and practice,
whilst also reflecting the social, cultural and political influences
of its international context. The course is intended for those who wish
to teach English as a second or foreign language; it will also be useful
for practising TESOL teachers who wish to update their knowledge and skills.
In-service TESOL teachers with appropriate qualifications and or experience
may, if approved, be allowed direct entry into the second year of the
degree.
The First Year provides an introduction to major
aspects of the field. As well as being a foundation for more advanced
studies in TESOL, it is intended to be helpful, for example, to those who
may find themselves working for a time as language assistants. The curriculum
consists of:
- Education 1
- TESOL 1
- Another selected course
The Second Year is intended to deepen the understanding
gained either from successful completion of the first year or from approved
prior qualifications and/or experience. It may therefore serve as an entry
point for approved in- service applicants. The curriculum comprises:
- Education 2
- TESOL 2
- Another selected course
In the Third Year all students undertake the
following four half courses:
- Discourse for TESOL 3h
- Learner Assessment in TESOL 3h
- Pedagogic Grammar 3h
- Research Methodology for TESOL 3h
Pre-service students in addition undertake an extended 12 week placement
which counts as one course.
In-service students take an additional two of the elective half courses
from the year four menu.
The Fourth Year consists of:
- Education 3h
- Education 4Bh
and four half courses selected from the following:
- Analysis of Classroom Practice 4h (compulsory)
- Computer Assisted Language Learning 4h
- Current Issues in TESOL 4h
- English for Specific Purposes (ESP) 4h
- Learning in L2 Classrooms 4h
- Literature for Language Teaching 4h
- Teaching Literature in the L2 Context 4h
- Materials Evaluation and Design 4h
- Teaching L2 Vocabulary 4h
- Teaching Young Learners in ELT 4h
There is also a major Professional Project.

administrator. The TESOL section also offers postgraduate
degrees.
Note: There is an exciting new
course for those who do not yet have the teaching experience necessary
for the MEd TESOL: this is the Pre-MEd
TESOL Access Course. This course begins January each year and
students who pass can gain direct entry into the one-year MEd TESOL
in September of the same year. |
