MEd TESOL in full-time Contact Mode

General Information

The Master's Degree in TESOL is of interest to

All experienced TESOL teachers (a teacher of English as a foreign, second or additional language) at a school or in further/higher education.

All TESOL teacher concerned with teacher training, management, course design and assessment.

Admission requirements

    • A first degree (applications from non-graduates will be considered on their merits)
    • A minimum of two years TESOL classroom experience
      or our
    • Pre-MEd TESOL Access Course

Applicants whose first language is not English require to provide evidence of proficiency in English e.g. IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each part.

Programme design

The programme is designed as a flexible modular programme which allows choice of specialisation in TESOL.

The programme aims to give participants an opportunity to develop their knowledge and expertise in all aspects of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

In addition it offers the possibility of exploring methods of TESOL teacher education and supervision, and management.

Programme structure

The programme consists of a taught course normally lasting from September to March, followed by preparation of a 12 - 15,000 word dissertation. The MEd is awarded on the basis of the taught course plus a dissertation.

Awards and programmes

Programme participants can register for:

    • Postgraduate Certificate in TESOL (one semester)
    • Postgraduate Diploma in TESOL (two semesters)
    • MEd in TESOL (full year i.e. the postgraduate diploma in TESOL plus a dissertation)

It is also possible to enrol for specific courses, which can be accumulated towards the Postgraduate Diploma and MEd, providing the whole programme is completed within six years.

Core Courses

 Language Education Research Methods
 TESOL Methodology
 The TESOL Curriculum
 TESOL and the Learner

Successful completion of three courses permits the award of the 'Postgraduate Certificate in TESOL', for those who wish to exit at this point. The PG Certificate carries credits towards the MEd TESOL.

Semester 2
January - March

 

Participants choose 2 option courses. The options that are available each year may change, but are likely to include:

 Learner Assessment in TESOL
 Evaluation & Design of TESOL Materials
 TESOL for Young Learners
 Techniques & Processes of Teacher Educ.
 Online Language Learning
 Management and TESOL
 Course Design for Business English
 Text and Discourse in TESOL

One of the 2 options may be chosen from other relevant programmes within the College of Humanities and Social Science.

Successful completion of the core courses, and two option courses, leads to the award of the 'Postgraduate Diploma in TESOL' for those who wish to exit at this point. The PG Diploma carries credits towards the MEd TESOL.
