MEd TESOL in Mixed Mode

Mixed Mode can be:

a) Unstructured
b) Structured

If you choose the unstructured mode, you decide which modules you do contact and whch ones you do by distance learning. Very few students take this option.

A full description of the 'structured' mode can be seen below.

Mixed Mode (Structured) Content

The content of the MEd TESOL in Mixed Mode (Structured) is identical to MEd TESOL in full-time Contact Mode. The credits for each course are the same, and the knowledge and understanding is also the same. The Certificate is three courses; the Diploma adds a further three courses; and finally there is the dissertation. Information about the content of each course can be found on the full-time contact mode page.

Successful completion of three courses permits the award of the 'Postgraduate Certificate in TESOL', for those who wish to exit at this point. The PG Certificate carries credits towards the MEd TESOL.

Successful completion of the core courses, and two option courses, leads to the award of the 'Postgraduate Diploma in TESOL' for those who wish to exit at this point. The PG Diploma carries credits towards the MEd TESOL.

Programme structure

The structure is different from the MEd TESOL in Contact Mode as you will be studying some courses in Edinburgh and some courses online. The availability of courses in each part of the programme will be indicated on acceptance onto the programme. The MEd TESOL in Mixed Mode (Structured) structure is this:

Summer One:
2 months’ Contact tuition in Edinburgh of two courses

Sept to Dec (semester 1):
online learning tuition of one course

Jan to Apr (semester 2):
online learning tuition of one course

Summer Two:
2 months’ Contact tuition in Edinburgh of two courses

Sept to June:
6 months’ online learning Dissertation (some students may finish well before June)

The September to April courses are on-line. Our state-of-the-art e-learning courses guarantee personalised care and support from the tutor, and immediate communication with the other participants round the world. You do tasks, interactive and collaborative activities with the other participants, supervised by your tutor. You can also exchange emails with your tutor if you wish. You submit assignments to your tutor on-line.

Flexible programme

The MEd TESOL Mixed Mode (Structured) is a part-time programme, and for that reason it is very flexible. We calculate that it should take 18 months to complete, (14 months for the Diploma and four months for the Dissertation), if you do your Dissertation intensively. You may prefer to take 24 months to complete (14 months for the diploma and 10 months for the Dissertation).

Application deadline 1st May.

Please note that the programme will run in this mode only if there are a sufficient number of participants. You may like to consider enrolling for the online mode of the programme instead of the mixed mode - more details about the online mode here.
