The MEd TESOL is now available in
a new online format. The content and validity will be the same as MEd TESOL
Contact. The difference will be that all core and option modules are on-line,
and the dissertation is also done by distance learning. Students will access
input on-line, and read e-journals, set texts and reprints of articles.
They will do short exercises to check comprehension, and then take part
in discussion forums on-line, doing collaborative tasks with their peers
on the programme, to evaluate, analyse and apply the knowledge and skills
acquired. The tutor will monitor the tasks and give group feedback. Students
will also have individual attention through email with the tutor.
This mode of the programme has been designed to give flexibility to English
language professionals who for various reasons are not able to either come
to Edinburgh to study or take up full-time study. You would be required
to study one course each semester, thus giving you time to continue working
in your current teaching position. To be able to access the course materials
you must have a good internet connection and computer, and you should also
have access to relevant library facilities (although many of the materials
in the programme are now available via library electronic resources).
Each of the taught courses will be available for one semester; in an
academic session you will study 2 taught courses (one course each semester),
completing the diploma level (six courses) in three years.
The course availability
for 2009-2010 is:
September - December (semester 1):
Language Education
Research Methods
January - April (semester 2):
TESOL Methodology, selected option courses
Dissertation supervision (for Master's level):
available throughout an
academic session
The online mode of the programme (as with the full-time programme) begins
in September of each academic year. Information about the entry requirements,
content, assessment and fees are the same as for the full-time programme
(except for the longer time needed to complete the programme in online
mode), and can be found at www.education.ed.ac.uk/crd/tesol/programmes/MEd-Contact.html.
