JISC X4L Maps and Learner Guides - An Update
Progress has been made on the JISC X4L 'Maps and Learner Guides' project, which is a 2 year collaborative effort between SCROLLA and SFEU (The Scottish Further Education Unit). A major goal of this project is to develop a tool that maps online learning resources already available freely on the Internet to the Scottish Qualifications framework. The project will re-purpose existing learner guides to create these as learning objects packaged and available for export to college and university learning environments, to be accessible through appropriate collections.
Most recently, user research was carried out to investigate the way the tool supports teaching activities and the way it is perceived by first time users. The most recent round of end-user engagement revealed high satisfaction levels when using the revised tool. The research findings from this work were published at the Forum for the Advancement for Continuing Education (FACE) 2003 conference held in July 2003.
The learner guide template is currently under design development and is being trialled by a group of FE tutors. The user experience has been positively reported by these tutors who have to date successfully created 18 interactive learner guides. Interviews with the secondees suggest that the template supports specific pedagogical needs, which augurs well for future uptake by the community.
