Entry Requirements

Applicants for entry to our postgraduate programmes normally hold an undergraduate university degree or equivalent professional qualification. We consider applicants from almost any academic and professional background and we see this as very healthy for the composition of the student cohort and indeed the profession. Whilst applicants normally hold a good honours degree (2.1 in UK, 3.25 in US, or B in ECTS), those who do not hold first degrees but whose employment or other educational experience provides evidence of intellectual and professional ability of an equivalent standard are also encouraged to apply. Such applicants will be asked to provide evidence of their potential to undertake academic study at postgraduate level, by for example submitting a previously written report or a negotiated written task with their applications.
We are very willing to consider applicants with non-standard academic backgrounds and a number of have successfully completed the programmes. However, it is important that all applicants satisfy themselves that they can commit to study at this level.
One way of deciding whether postgraduate study suits you is to register for one of the courses of any of the Postgraduate Certificate Programmes as a part-time student. You can then attend the course and submit the assignment. Staff can then give you appropriate advice on progression to complete a full programme.
The general requirements for admission to postgraduate study are outlined in the University of Edinburgh postgraduate prospectus. A paper copy of the postgraduate prospectus is also available from the Postgraduate Office.
If you are an international student and you still have questions regarding grade equivalency, please contact the Postgraduate Office (educationpg@ed.ac.uk).
