Outdoor Education

Professional Development Programme

The Professional Development Programme for postgraduate diploma and MSc students incorporates practical skills courses (which vary according to programme), a four-week work placement, a three-day first-aid for the outdoors course, and a two-week expedition (for OE students).

The practical skills courses take advantage of the unique attributes of Scotland’s spectacular landscape. As students will inevitably possess a range of backgrounds and abilities, the programme’s goals are first, to experience living on and travelling through the Scottish landscape, and second, to increase students’ technical and practical abilities at a level that is individually appropriate. All of this is done with the underlying ethos of linking theory and practice.

OE students take five practical courses: Spey Descent, Scottish Rock, Cairngorm Hill-walking, Winter Mountaineering, and West Coast Sea-kayaking.

OESE students take three practical courses: Spey Descent, Land-based Competency, and Outdoor Environmental Education in Practice.

There are two optional courses, both of which are available to all students at an additional cost: Alpine skiing and Nordic skiing.
