Research Interests
My academic interests lie in moral education, and specifically character education. 'Character development' has had a long, but assumed, relationship with Outdoor Education, and specifically Adventure Education.
Recent scholarship is starting to question whether character is indeed formed through education that takes place out of doors. My thesis aims to study the possibility of Outdoor Education as a tool for character development, but it does so through a philosophical lens, using qualitative research.
Using the virtue-ethical paradigm espoused by Aristotle in The Nicomachean Ethics, the thesis seeks to contemplate this ancient approach to virtue as a template for a modern understanding of character development within Outdoor Education.
Using the above theoretical framework, this thesis examines the concept of character development through a case study of an expedition. Data collection is anticipated to be: interviews, observational fieldnotes, and documents.
