Project Title: Working with changing knowledge: a case study in Computing Science

Supervisor:

Dr Charles Anderson

Research topic:

An investigation of how a group of long-experienced Computer Science academics handled knowledge change in their subject. The academics were individually interviewed, in one-to one open conversations and reflected upon change in knowledge and teaching over the past twenty or more years of teaching in the subject. The site was a Scottish new university and the subject was more towards applied Computing than theoretical Computer Science.

Professional experience:

The principal findings are that change is derived from outwith the academy; the main interests of the academy are in programming as the core field; field knowledge exists in several different groups and enters the academy from companies, students and lay users; the principal addition to field knowledge by those working in the academy is via the design of new degrees in the field.
