Project Title: How do supranational processes (including European integration and the work of the OECD) and policy making affect UCD's institutional dynamics and policy production, specifically in relation to modularisation?

Supervisors:

Professor Lindsay Paterson

Research topic:

This research investigates the forces shaping policymaking and the governance of Irish higher educational policy, by analysing the modular policy at UCD. The construction of this modularisation policy is explored using the concept of social capital and policy networks to explain global forces and why some practices and policies remain national and localized.   The introduction of a modular policy to UCD is of interest in reviewing the local/national/global policy dynamic and is an example of an EU meta-policy which was locally implemented. The rise of the 'European education space' or 'European learning space' signifies changes in trans-national governance which has altered the roles of national system policy actors regarding governance and policy. Modularisation is used as a focus here to explore the changing nature of governance in higher education, the actors influencing and contributing to this policy and the relationship between them.
