Project Title: Could Applied Behaviour Analysis be used as an effective educational intervention in the support and teaching of pupils with Autism Spectrum Conditions?
Supervisor:
Research topic:
Individuals with a diagnosis
of Autism have qualitative impairments in the three areas of communication,
social interaction and flexibility of thought. It is a pervasive development
disorder that affects an individual's concept of the world around them
and consequently individuals with Autism have a severely disrupted sense
of self and marked difficulty in their abilities to understand and empathise
with others. This obviously leads to problems interacting socially and
accessing positive and functional learning experiences. School is often
a confusing and stressful place for children with Autism. With the increasing
numbers of pupils with Autism diagnosis in Scottish schools today there
is a pressing need for school staff to be trained in effective methods
of educating and supporting pupils with these specific needs. Applied Behaviour
Analysis is one such method that merits further exploration as to its value
within a classroom situation.
