Project Title: 'Don't just do something, stand there' Naturalistic decision making development during and post wilderness first aid certification

Supervisors:

Dr Ken McCulloch and Dr Hamish Ross

Research topic:

Many outdoor leaders are required to take a wilderness/remote medicine course prior to their first group expedition. These courses certify individuals for 3 years and many do not revisit the knowledge acquired until it is time for recertification. What happens psychologically to a leader who is faced with their first traumatic event during their initial certification period?

This research study intends to analyse these personal experiences of traumatic events to determine how we can provide better training during certification and/or post certification (In-Service Training).

Teaching experience:

I have been an Instructor for the American Red Cross since 1997 for Lifeguarding, Swimming Lesson Instruction, CPR, First Aid, AED, and Oxygen Administration. In 2003 I became an Instructor Trainer for all of the above courses. I have now converted most of these Instructor certifications to the British Red Cross Equivalent and currently volunteer teaching these courses for the Edinburgh British Red Cross.

I have also been teaching on the Education 2A course for BEd programme for the 2008 term.
