Project Title: Primary Education in China: Curriculum reformation in current context and its possibilities for change

Supervisors:

Dr Gari Donn and Dr Lesley Reid

Research topic:

In English as a second language teaching and learning, students' development of intercultural understanding is just as important as their linguistic improvement. Systematic support from language teaching materials which carry linguistic and cultural messages is required in the language learning process.

My PhD study attempts to find out how the national English language textbook is developed as a media for cultural value transmission and how textbook design is affected by curriculum policy within the context of Chinese primary schools.

Teaching experience:

I have been teaching Mandarin Primary1, Primary4, and Primary5 in an Edinburgh Chinese Community School since 2007.

Publications & presentations:

Li, J.Y & Luo, C (2001) A report on student living expenses for undergraduates in Beijing, Beijing Evening News.

I worked as a contract translator for ICTIC Press between 2007 and 2008. I translated the book "Galvez, S. (2006) The Thrifty Girl's Guide to Glamour, Polk Dot Press and an imprint of Adams Media, Avon." which was published in 2008.

I participated in the translation of "Phelps, M. & Cazeneuve, B. (2004) Michael Phelps: beyond the surface Peter, L. Bannon and Joseph J. Bannon Sr., Champaign." which is currently being edited.
