Project Title: Adolescents' Engagement with Greenspace: Perceptions, Use and Impact on Physical Activity Levels and Well-being

Supervisors:

Professor Candace Currie and Professor Pete Higgins

Research topic:

Access to greenspaces, especially for young people, has become a significant policy concern. In Scotland the issue has been increasingly seen in integrated policy terms leading to a new Strategic Framework for Environment and Health which links policy commitments on health, equalities, environmental justice and sustainable development. Physical activity and its relationship to health and well-being is a key issue, but related issues of environmental sustainability awareness, an over-cautious approach to risk and a lack of curricular learning outside the classroom are all of interest to policy makers. Greenspaces provide a major resource for physical activity, and access to attractive, high quality greenspace is associated with increased physical activity. Given the role of physical activity in the prevention of, and therapy for, a wide range of chronic illnesses (e.g. coronary heart disease, musculo-skeletal diseases, obesity, diabetes, stroke and cancer), such links between greenspace and physical activity suggest that increasing the availability and use of greenspaces could have significant potential for supporting long-term health gain within the population.

This study will investigate the role of greenspace in young people's lives, specifically in relation to their physical activity and physical and mental wellbeing. Greenspace will be considered within the context of young people's neighbourhoods and broader aspects of the local physical environment which may impact on their physical activity and health.
