Project Title: A Praxis of Place: A case study of place-based education in the outdoors

Supervisors:

Dr Robbie Nicol and Professor Morwenna Griffiths

Research topic:

Using an action research approach, I will be working with a group of adults returning to the same hill-based venue in Argyll over a period of 9 months. We will be looking at the various different elements of that place - ecology, culture, geography, through work and experiential activities. From this i will develop a case study of place-based education, embracing various different epistemologies (e.g. scientific, phenomenological), and looking at the way in which the group and the venue interact to create a sense of the place. I will at the same time be using this study to critically evaluate some of the theory on place, and environmental education.
