in Inclusive & Special Education
The new MSc in Inclusive & Special
Education is a one-year, full time programme at the University of Edinburgh
for those wanting to:
- Develop and appropriately apply knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant
to inclusive and special education and the contexts in which it takes
place;
- Reflect critically on the relationships between theory and practice
and explore issues in the implementation of educational and social
principles and ideals;
- Engage with and where appropriate influence policy
issues and the practice of professionals in relation to the delivery
of inclusive and special education; and
- Develop extended skills in
research and enquiry, including the use of literature, reviewing evidence,
gathering, organising and evaluating data, responding to evidence and
providing critical comment.

Who is the
MSc Inclusive & Special Education for? |
The programme is appropriate for:
- Experienced primary, secondary and special school teachers seeking
to gain further knowledge and to develop research skills;
- Recently qualified
teachers who wish to take a Masters-level programme prior to beginning
their teaching careers;
- Professionals and aspiring professionals in
educational contexts (such as advisors, inspectors, policy-makers
and others with a role in decision making and policy formulation);
and,
- Those
who wish to develop knowledge and understanding of inclusive and
special education at a leading centre of excellence.

Programme contents |
As a student on the MSc in Inclusive and Special Education you will take
the following core (compulsory) courses:
- Comparative Approaches to Inclusive and Special Education
- Education
for All (Additional Support for Learning)
- Educational Enquiry (Research
Training)
You will also write a dissertation on a topic of your choice. This is
an exciting opportunity to undertake a small-scale piece of research, under
the direction of a supervisor.
In addition, you will take three optional courses, normally chosen from
the wide range of courses offered within the programme area. By negotiation
with the programme co-ordinator, and subject to availability, you may also
choose one or more courses from those offered in the MSc in Education.
Optional courses in special and inclusive education include:
- Working Together
- Helping Troubled Children
- Deaf Studies
- Audiology
- Specific Learning Difficulties: Dyslexia
- Inclusive Curriculum for Pupils & Students
with Visual Impairment
- The Developing Bilingual Learner
The courses offered may vary from year to year.

Studying Inclusive & Special Education at The University
of Edinburgh
The Moray House School of Education at the University of Edinburgh has
been an international leader in special and inclusive education for over
40 years. We have extensive teaching, research and consultancy experience
in schools and other settings, with specialist expertise in a wide range
of areas within inclusive and special education. The staff are internationally
respected for their research and publications.
You will study alongside other full-time students from all over the world.
You will also study alongside teachers and other education professionals
currently working in Scotland, studying on a part-time basis. This diversity
benefits everyone: it makes for an interesting and challenging learning
environment, as well as being socially rewarding.
The programme is taught just off the Royal Mile, a few minutes' walk from
the famous landmarks of the beautiful city of Edinburgh.
Further Study at The University of Edinburgh
Graduates of the MSc in Inclusive & Special Education are ideally placed
to undertake doctoral study. The Moray House School of Education at the
University of Edinburgh offers PhD courses which usually take a further
3-4 years of full-time study, involving an extended piece of research under
expert supervision. Many of the members of the Inclusive and Special Education

Entry
requirements |
- Applicants should normally have at least an upper second class honours
degree, or its equivalent, in a relevant discipline.
- IELTS 6.5 or equivalent
(for applicants whose first language is not English).
