The Moray House School of Education offers a range of programmes for people who wish to pursue their interest in the management of training, learning and development in organisations. Our taught postgraduate programmes include a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and Master of Science degree in The Management of Training & Development. The programmes are designed to develop the critical understanding and knowledge of professionals involved in staff development and the management of organisational learning and change. The Programmes are validated by the UK Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), and students can follow a path leading to qualification for graduate entry to the CIPD.

The programmes are aimed at practitioners with an interest in training, staff development and organisational learning. This includes human resource development and training officers; people in other positions who have responsibility for staff development, management development or organisational change programmes; or people who are interested in pursuing a career in this area. The programmes attract an international group of participants with experience gained in various sectors, including a wide range of commercial businesses sectors, public authorities (e.g. local authorities, the health service, social services, education and the armed forces), and voluntary organisations (e.g. the churches, welfare organisations).


Mode of study


Taught programmes are offered for full-time or part-time study. The full-time MSc. programme runs over 12 months, commencing in September. Part-time study is on a modular basis, which can be tailored to individual students. Part-time students must complete the Certificate within 2 years of commencing study, the Diploma within four years and the Masters dissertation within 6 years. Courses usually run in the School of Education Moray House premises in Holyrood Road, in the historic Old Town centre of Edinburgh. The usual delivery pattern for each course is a weekly three-hour session over one semester. Some courses may be offered in the evening or by block delivery.


Programme structure


Three levels of postgraduate qualifications are available within the Programme:   Certificate, Diploma or a full MSc. Each qualification is constructed from a range of core and optional courses.


The Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits) consists of:

    • Human Resource Development: Theory and Practice (20 credits) or Managing Organisational Learning and Knowledge (20 credits)
    • Human Resource Management (20 credits) or Management Concepts and Applications (20 credits)
    • Along with either one 20 credit or two 10 credit option courses from List A


The Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) includes all the requirements of the Certificate along with:

    • Human Resource Development: Theory and Practice or Managing Organisational Learning and Knowledge (whichever not taken)
    • Research Methods in the Management of Training and Development (10 credits)
    • One 10 or 20 Credit option course from List A
    • 10 or 20 Credit option course(s) from List A or B


Optional course List A

    • Managing the Training and Development Function (10 credits)
    • Designing and Delivering Training (10 credits)
    • Managing Communication, Information and Decision-Making (10 credits)
    • Work-Based Learning (PG Diploma only, 20 credits)
    • Evaluation in Context (20 credits)
    • Human Dynamics in Work Settings (20 credits)
    • Digital Environments for Training and Development (10 credits)

The MSc involves completion of the Diploma followed by completion of a dissertation of 12,000-15,000 words.

Entry requirements / Applying / Fees


The usual entry requirement is a good honours degree and some relevant work experience. Mature students with other qualifications and experience can be considered, if they can demonstrate that their academic and professional background has equipped them to study at post-graduate level.
