Sport & Recreation
Business Management
(MSc, Postgraduate Diploma) -
The MSc in Sport and Recreation
Business Management has been devised to reflect the increasing requirement
for a greater business orientation in sport and recreation. The SRBM programme
provides you with in-depth knowledge of management practices and professional
skills increasingly required by those working in the sport and recreation
industry at a managerial level. This knowledge is particularly important
given the financial constraints and accountability in the public sector;
the rapid growth, and competition in the commercial sector; and, the growing
interaction and interdependence of those professionals working with the
volunteer sector in sport.
Sport-related degree programmes at the University of Edinburgh are located
within the Scottish
Centre for Physical Education, Sport and Leisure Studies (PESLS). We
have a long history of providing undergraduate and postgraduate degree
programmes in sport, recreation and leisure. For details of the research
interests of colleagues in PESLS see PESLS
Research web page.
"...this programme provides an in-depth
knowledge of management practices and professional skills increasingly required
by those working in the sport and recreation industry"
The SRBM programme consists of two stages. The Postgraduate Diploma stage
of the programme involves six taught courses designed to meet the development
needs created by current policies and procedures in the sport and recreation
industry. In the first semester you investigate the principles and practices
of management in sport and recreation organisations and the wider environment
within which the sport and recreation sector operates. The second semester
builds on the first semester studies and examines how the organisation
responds to the wider operating environment. The elective (sixth) course
allows you to explore a cognate subject area in greater depth. The Masters
stage of the programme requires you to undertake a substantial piece of
original research and provides an opportunity for in-depth reflection in
a particular area of interest or working environment.
The objectives of the programme are to enable you to:
- Apply management theory and principles to the context of managing
sport and recreation organisations
- Examine critically key issues and
social trends affecting participation and involvement in sport
and recreation
- Identify and evaluate recent changes in sport and recreation
policies and practices
