Research - Themes & Projects

Theme 1: Children's and Young People's Learning and Development .

Reseachers and examples of projects

This theme is the main area of research in the department of Curriculum Research and Development, but there are also significant contributions from Education and Society, Physical Education, Sport and Leisure Studies and Educational Studies. It links with the Learners, Learning and Teaching Network of the Applied Educational Research Scheme (AERS), a collaborative programme of research and capacity-building funded by the Scottish Executive and Scottish Funding Council, and co-ordinated by Edinburgh University.

A sound understanding of how children and young people develop and learn is essential for the wellbeing of both individuals and society. Our research in this theme recognises that development and learning entail processes of change of many kinds, including cognitive, emotional, physical and social change, all of which can inter-relate in complex ways. Our aim is to extend knowledge of these processes that can be useful to a wide variety of individuals and agencies, parents, teachers, schools, education managers, policy makers and children and young people themselves.
