Abstract

This research project was designed to provide information on the impact of investment made in developing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) access and provision in schools across Scotland. From 1998 onwards, the Scottish Executive engaged in a considerable investment in training, hardware and infrastructure with the aim of increasing the use of information technologies in primary and secondary schools and improving the skills of the teachers and pupils in using these to promote effective teaching and learning. The project provided information on the levels of performance of pupils at Primary 7 and Secondary 4 on a range of ICT skills and abilities, their experiences of, and attitudes to, ICT and, in addition, the views of their teachers at the beginning of the initiatives and again once they were well under way. Data were gathered by means of practical tests in selected schools, written pupil tests in a random sample of schools, and two national surveys of pupils' and teachers' attitudes, expectancies and experiences. Data gathering was undertaken in two rounds, firstly in 1998-99 and again in 2000-01.
