Abstract |
In
an innovative and ambitious Local Authority project, laptops and
digital projectors were provided to give personal ICT access to selected
teachers and their pupils (60 pupils in secondary; 30 pupils in a
primary class) as a pilot for possible extended laptop provision
throughout one Local Authority's schools. The initiative had as its
aim radical change in learning and teaching relationships, mediated
by technology including wireless networking. The pupils were afforded
access to a range of learning related activities: accessing a wide
range of information, communications with other pupils and teachers,
and the extension of access to learning resources to their homes.
The associated funded research aimed to evaluate the initial and
ongoing planning processes, to monitor the implementation of the
project aims and their impact in the classrooms, and to assess the
impact on the learning and attainment of the pupils. The data collection
strategies were both quantitative and qualitative, comprising interviews,
observations, and questionnaires, involving pupils, parents and staff
and yielded insight into the successes and failures of the consultation,
planning, development and implementation stages. |
