Abstract |
The
National Museums Online Learning Project is a £1.7m project
being undertaken a consortium of English national museums and galleries
(British Museum, Imperial War Museum, National Portrait Gallery,
Natural History Museum, Royal Armouries, Sir John Soane's Museum,
Tate, Victoria and Albert Museum, Wallace Collection) and funded
by the Invest to Save Initiative from the Treasury. The purpose of
the project is to get the vast amount of content already on these
ten national museum and gallery websites better used, focusing on
using existing databases, articles and functionality to encourage
users to engage critically and creatively with museum and gallery
collections. The target audiences for the project are schools
and lifelong learners.
The
University of Edinburgh team are research partners to the project,
focusing on mapping the user experience of the project's artefacts
and learning environments, in relation to the changing patterns of
internet participation we are seeing both in online learning and in
its broader social contexts. We are investigating the project's impact
on the ways in which people access, use and learn from museums and
their digital collections, addressing some key research questions relating
to usage, digital literacies, digital divides, digital culture and
participatory, creative approaches to learning.
