Abstract |
It
is typically assumed, by psychologists and philosophers alike, that
it is through student-focused approaches to teaching which actively
engage students in processes associated with active, inquiry-based
and reflective learning (inviting student to challenge core beliefs
and thereby experience conceptual shifts), that personal and intellectual
maturity, so essential for success in later personal, professional
and civic life, is best supported. This study explores the idea or meaning of
'authenticity in teaching' and, in conjunction with it, investigates
the sort of academic identities needed to bring about the 'knowing'
and 'being' in students usually associated with preparedness for
the complexities and challenges of today's world. Specifically, it
seeks to better understand the complex relationships between academics'
sense of "teacher identity", their authenticity in teaching, and
their students' learning and development at research-intensive universities,
across three subject areas (English, Law and Physics).
