Abstract

The experience of learning and teaching on taught Masters courses has received comparatively little attention within the research literature on higher education; and in particular the topic of dissertation writing at Masters level has not been investigated in any depth. This project aims to begin to address this gap in knowledge by examining student and staff perspectives on producing a Masters dissertation. The study, conducted within a faculty of education in a Scottish university, involves a survey of students who have recently completed a Masters dissertation, and focused interviews with a sub-set of the students surveyed and their supervisors. It is seen as the first phase of a longer-term programme of research into taught Masters degrees.
