Abstract |
This research
was commissioned to identify and evaluate how Adult Literacy and
Numeracy (ALN) partnerships had developed their approach to accreditation
to ensure progression opportunities for all adult literacies learners.
A survey of providers and four case studies of practice were used
to examine current practice and future possibilities. The findings
suggest that for community based ALN the main challenge in developing
and delivering accredited learning is the need for capacity building
to ‘grow the professional field’. Staff have limited
time and require training and support. The ‘portfolio building’ approach
lends itself to a community-based ALN context but not all know how
effective it can be in delivering accredited learning. Within individual
ALN Partnerships, a sharing of strengths and expertise, at local
level, could overcome some of the concerns raised. The expansion
of ALN accredited learning requires an infra-structure to support
it. A perceived shortage of teaching and learning resources that ‘fit’ a
Social Practices approach was raised. Development of appropriate
teaching and learning resources to support accredited learning is
also an issue for some areas. Progression is complex and happens
within provision as well as in moving on to another provider. Progression
to accredited learning should not be seen solely as the domain of
colleges. Some learners do not necessarily regard accreditation as
part of what they want to achieve. It is important that a hierarchy
of learning and learning opportunities, with accreditation being
as being seen as the most valuable, is not introduced by default. |
