Abstract |
Background
and context: This research examined the reports produced by eight
pilot projects that sought to promote the awareness and participation
of employers and employees in workplace literacies development and
developed models for addressing literacies learning in the workplace,
including guidance, to provide employers with a 'consistent
one-stop-shop' approach - from initial awareness raising to delivery of learning. These
projects are part of a response to the Scottish Ministers' aim of engaging employers
and employees in literacies learning in the workplace.
Research
Aims and Objectives:
The main objectives of the study were to provide an overview and analysis
of eight workplace literacies pilot projects in Scotland that ran from
December 2006 to 2008, with the aim of producing guidance for future
practice. The research reviews the work reported on in these projects
in order to consider the models of approach identified by each of the
projects within the 'Awareness, Identification and Solution' (AIS) model
of approach that demarcates between the three main stages of raising
employers' awareness of literacies, identifying the needs of employers
and employees and brokering solutions to the identification of literacies
needs. It also highlights effective practice and how it
might be replicated, summarises the lessons learnt from the projects and provides
key guidance and learning points.
