Abstract |
This
is an investigation of the role which the subject called 'English'
acquired in the emerging system of secondary education in Scotland
from c.1900 onwards, paying particular attention to the ways in which,
at the secondary level, it took over the role which moral philosophy
had in the nineteenth-century universities. |
