Project title The Social Significance of Soccer in Japan and East Asia

Researchers

Dr John Horne, (Physical Education, Sport & Leisure Studies, School of Education) University of Edinburgh

Keywords

Sport; leisure; sociology; Japan; J.League

Abstract

Research interest in sport in Japan was stimulated in the early 1990s by the launch of the professional soccer "J.League" and the well-publicised intention for the Japanese Football Association (JFA) to bid to host the 2002 World Cup Finals. The social significance of sport in Japan is being considered involving historical research, analysis of economic data relating to the J.League, and involvement in theoretical debates in the sociology of sport about globalization. This project has now expanded into a consideration of soccer in other East Asian societies.
