Abstract

This is a multi-disciplinary, cross-faculty research project, focusing on Scottishness and Englishness. It will investigate several aspects of national identity in the two countries, and the relationship between that and constitutional change. Lindsay Paterson's role is to lead a study of academics' views on the relevance (if any) of national identity to their work; (with Alison Park and Paula Surridge) to use this grant to extend the Scottish Social Attitudes Surveys into years beyond 2000. A strong developing in? relates to Scottish identity and the impact of the Scottish Parliament on educational policy, drawing on sociological and political frameworks of interpretation, and linking with the University's Scottish Governance Forum.

(with Nick Hopkins and Stephen Reicher) to look at young people's attitudes to crossing the Scottish-English border on entry to the labour market.
