Abstract

In 2003/04 there were 300 permanent exclusions from special schools and 30 from Pupil Referral Units (PRUs). Although small in number, these young people form a very vulnerable group who are likely to experience poorer outcomes in later life; many may end up not in education, employment or training (NEET) or becoming involved in crime or anti-social behaviour. The report of the Practitioners' Group on School Behaviour and Discipline (the Steer report) highlighted a lack of information on what happens to young people excluded from PRUs or special schools for young people with Behavioural, Emotional and Social Difficulties (BESD), and a concern about the availability and appropriateness of other forms of alternative provision available for this group. The report thus made a specific recommendation to commission research to investigate what happens to these pupils and to investigate the appropriateness of alternative forms of provision for them. This three year longitudinal study will follow 30 young people who have been permanently excluded from PRUs and Special schools. This project is being carried out with colleagues from the University of West of Scotland and the University of Warwick.
