Biographical Note

I studied English and French at Mary Immaculate College/University of Limerick, Ireland before going to work as an English Language Teacher in France. Following my stay in France, I completed an MA in English Language Teaching at the University of Limerick and worked there as both an English Language Teacher and Teacher Trainer at undergraduate and postgraduate level for seven years before going on to teach academic writing at its sister institution, Mary Immaculate College. Following the completion of my PhD which examined age and gender-related variation in spoken discourse, I spent a year working as a Lecturer in Sociolinguistics at University College Dublin. In September 2008, I took up a position as Associate Lecturer in Language Education at the University of Edinburgh where I am part of the TESOL team located in the Department of Curriculum Research and Development. Here I teach on the MEd in TESOL as well as the MSc in Language Teaching. I am a member of various research groups: IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language), British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL), IVACS (Inter-Varietal Applied Corpus Studies), Variational Pragmatics Network, CALS (Centre for Applied Language Studies), University of Limerick, Ireland.
