Profile

David Thomson is senior lecturer in Mathematics Education and teaches on the BEd Primary and PGDE Primary and Secondary Programmes. He also has strategic oversight of all undergraduate programmes in The Moray House School of Education in his role as Director (Associate Dean) of Undergraduate Studies.

His research interests involve:

    • Children's acquisition of place value concepts
    • Children's understanding of angle concept
    • International comparisons of mathematical achievement
    • Education policy and curriculum design in relation to primary mathematics education

David has contributed extensively to school in-service in many Scottish local authorities on aspects of the Mathematics 5-14 curriculum. He is chairperson of the Scottish Primary Mathematics Group whose resources for teachers and children are widely used in UK schools.

He is co-author of the multimedia teaching resource, ‘Making Sense of Number’, which focuses on aspects of early numeracy development.
