Research Supervision

Jo has supervised PhD, EdD, Masters and Honours projects in the areas of early childhood education, play, policy & children's participation. She is interested in supervising projects in any of these areas.


Biographical Note

Jo has taught early years in primary schools in Queensland, Australia and in the UK. Her research interests focus on the educational experiences of children in the year before compulsory schooling, with a particular emphasis on the adult generated policies and programmes that frame up this year of education. Jo's PhD was an historical analysis of preschool education in Queensland government schools, making use of developments of Foucault's notion of governmentality. She has also published in the areas of gender, play, pedagogy and policy. Her current research focus is on children's participation and citizenship and early years education for environmental sustainability. At the University of Edinburgh, Jo teaches on the Initial Teacher Education and Childhood Practices programmes. Jo is Adjunct Associate Professor in the Centre for Learning Innovation, Queensland University of Technology.
