Principal
Interests
I am interested in young people and
non-school, non-formal education, including youth work
and, particularly, sail training; young people's citizenship;
educational work to help young people become critical
social actors. I am interested in the use of qualitative
sociological, ethnographic research methodology in relation
to these and other areas of education.
Research
Supervision
I am happy to supervise research under the headings above. I currently supervise doctoral students in the following areas:
- Novice outdoor leaders' experiences in coping with traumatic accident and injury situations while in remote locations
- Practice learning in the training of medical general practitioners
Biographical
Note
From 1973 to 1992 I worked in
various local authorities' Youth and Community Service or Community Education
Services developing and supporting youth work and adult education programmes
in a range of settings. From 1984-1992 I was a Team Leader in the Lothian
Regional Council Community Education Service. At that time I also worked
as a part-time tutor in the Open University Voluntary Sector Management
programme and undertook consultancy work in the voluntary sector. Since
joining the staff at Moray House in 1992
I have undertaken a number of roles including that of Programme Coordinator
for the BA
Community Education and of Co-Director of the School of Education PhD
programme from 2004-2008.
My teaching commitments include a range of Community Education courses, as well
as contributions to other postgraduate courses in the School and to 'The
Professional and Policy Context of Educators' Work' with Prof
Lindsay Paterson. My PhD, completed in 2002, was 'Four Days Before the Mast:
A study of sail training in the UK' and I have continued to develop research
in this field. In my spare time I maintain and sail a 60-year-old wooden sailing
yacht.
Current
and Recent Research
I am currently involved in two main areas of personal academic research:
- Young people and sail training. I am continuing to explore questions about the nature and benefits of this form of work with young people.
- The problem of professionalism
as understood and enacted by different kinds of practitioners in education.
In particular I am exploring the relationship between 'professionalism',
'voluntarism' and 'activism' in a range of formal and informal contexts.
