Biographical Note

I studied English Language and Literature at Edinburgh University before working for fifteen years as a teacher of English and a Head of Department in several schools in the Edinburgh area. I returned to part-time academic study on a Masters' Programme in 1992 in Edinburgh University when I joined the School of Education as a Lecturer in Language Studies, and completed the MEd in 1996. My PhD, completed in 2004, investigated the listening practices of pupils and the teaching practices of teachers within the socio-cultural contexts of secondary school English classrooms. I am the Course Organiser for the PGDE (Secondary) English Course, Course Organiser for the Master's Course 'Language Learners, Learning and Teaching' (a core course in the Master's Programme MSc in Education: Language - Theory, Practice and Literacy), and I teach on several other Masters' courses. I am currently Depute Director of Postgraduate Studies and Co-coordinator of the School's PhD Programme. For the past three years I have been involved in a large European Union Interreg III project which established underlying guiding principles for European Regional Colleges (ERCs).
