Biographical
Note
Pete has worked for a number
of organisations including Outward Bound (Malaysia) and Bradford Woods
(Indiana University). Closer to home he has worked for regional councils
and commercial providers.
In addition to work at outdoor
centres, Pete is involved in expeditions. He has worked extensively with
the British Schools Exploring Society and
screened expedition proposals as a part of the expeditions committee. He
has led expeditions to Greenland, Central Asia, the Himalayas and Africa.
He is also chair of the Scottish Panel of the Young
Explorers Trust (YET).
Research interests are in philosophy,
hermeneutics and epistemology of outdoor education. Pete's PhD explored
the contribution of youth expeditions to the values, narrative and authenticity
of participants. Prior
to teaching at Edinburgh Pete lectured at the University of Strathclyde.
Pete is responsible for MSc and PhD study in outdoor education
and experiential learning.
He
is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical
Society and founder of the Journal
of Adventure Education and Outdoor Learning. Pete served on the Board of
Directors for the Association for Experiential
Education and is currently
on the Journal Advisory Committee for the Journal of Experiential Education.
Pete is also reviewer for the Australian Journal of Outdoor Education and
Leisure Studies. Interests include mountaineering, cycling, skiing and
wilderness expeditions.
