BSc (Honours) Applied Sport
Science
This programme is designed to develop
the knowledge of the place, value and purpose of sport and exercise within
society through consideration of those scientific aspects that underpin sports
activity, performance, and experience. An understanding will also be developed
of theoretical yet applied knowledge in the key disciplines that affect exercise,
sports participation, and the development of performance.

First and second year |
The curriculum for the First and Second
Years of the programme draws on the scientific perspectives of sporting
activity including sports physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology and
motor control. These are complemented by consideration of sport and society,
the growth and development of contemporary sports cultures, the social
significance of sport, and an examination of contemporary issues. The courses
include:
Sport Science 1Ah, 1Bh, 2Ah and 2Bh and in addition Sport in Social Context 1Ah,
1Bh, 2Ah and 2Bh.
A choice of two further courses or four half courses, for example, from
the School of Education or the College of Science and Engineering, must
be included. Courses taken in the College of Science and Engineering for
this programme require candidates to have achieved Chemistry at either
Higher Grade or A-level.

Third and fourth year |
The Third Year comprises:
Sport Science 3Ah and Sport Science 3Bh
Application
of Research to Sports Science 3h
and further option courses including the following from the School
of Education:
Modes of Training for Sports Performance 3h
Sports Nutrition 3h
Exercise, Fitness and Health 3h
Sports Development 3h
Coaching Children 3h
Promoting Physical Activity 3h
Miniproject 3h
Options from, for example, the College of Science and Engineering may
also be available. These are subject to prerequisite study in the first
two years and may include: Brain and Behaviour, Human Anatomy, Pharmacology,
and Physiology, of which two must be taken. Prerequisite study requires
Chemistry at either Higher Grade or A-Level.
